VerbMaster Teacher Guide

Module 5: Getting the Best Results

VerbMaster works best when it's paired with consistent routines and clear expectations. This section will give you practical strategies to keep students motivated, accountable, and on track — so you can get the most out of every feature VerbMaster offers.

Setting Clear Expectations

Students thrive when they know exactly what's expected. A little structure at the start goes a long way toward building lasting study habits.

  • Decide on grading use — Will VerbMaster count as participation, completion, or extra credit? Set this early and make it clear.
  • Communication requirements — Let students know how often they should practice (e.g. finish each weekly assignment, zero out mastery questions).
  • Stay consistent — Use the dashboard to check assignments regularly and hold students accountable.

5.1 The Importance of Mastery Reviews

Part 1: Monitor Mastery Reviews

Having your students complete their assignments is crucial — that's how the verbs get into their brains in the first place.

But just as important are their Mastery Reviews.

Students will see the number of pending Mastery Questions (MQs) in a coral-colored circle. Their goal? Get that number to zero.

Students who complete their lessons and consistently keep their Mastery Questions at zero are the ones who crush it — not just on quizzes, but on long-term retention and overall fluency.

Student cards showing Mastery Question counts

You can see how many Mastery Questions each student has due by tapping Class Progress > Students; it's shown in a capsule in the upper right of each student card. Again, the goal is to keep this number as low as possible.

Part 2: Staying on Top of It

If students ignore their Mastery Questions, they pile up.
Build time and structure into your class to keep them on track.

For middle and high schoolers:

Consider occasionally giving them a full class period to catch up.

For university students:

More independence is expected — but you can still support success by creating space for reviews.

PRO TEACHER TIP

Host a weekly or biweekly "Mastery Hour" — throw on Gipsy Kings, open your classroom, and let students focus on knocking out a backlog of Mastery Questions. It's a simple move, but it sends a powerful message:

These reviews matter. This is part of the path to fluency.

Creating a regular, low-stress time for reviews shows students you value the process — and makes it easier for them to stay on track.

Part 3: Verbolotls: Motivation Built Into Mastery Reviews

Dressing a Verbolotl in the Shop

Verbolotls make review progress visible and motivating. Every time students learn a new verb, they hatch a Verbolotl — a digital companion that grows and glows as they continue to practice.

These Verbolotls tap into three powerful motivators:

  • Style & Ownership: Students can customize their verbolotls with items from the Shop, giving them a sense of pride in their progress.
  • Cultural Treasures: Special items inspired by Spanish-speaking cultures add an extra layer of fun and cultural connection.
  • Peer Motivation: Students can even send shop gifts to classmates, turning practice into encouragement and friendly competition.
PRO TEACHER TIP

Encourage students to zero out their Mastery Questions regularly. Every time they hit zero, they earn bonus study points to dress their Verbolotls and send gifts to classmates. This makes them check reviews more often, keep the numbers low, and stay motivated through steady rewards.

(We'll dig deeper into study points in the next section.)

5.2 Motivation That Resets Every Week

Part 1: Leaderboards

Leaderboard header on dashboard Bonus Study Points chart

Leaderboards are found in the top-right corner of your dashboard. They're powered by study points — the same points students use to dress their Verbolotls. Here, those points also let students compete for the top spot in their class.

Student earn these study points in the following ways:

  • 1–5 study points for every question answered in VerbMaster
  • Bonus points at every Mastery Question milestone — students earn +10 after their 10th MQ of the day, +20 after the 20th, +30 after the 30th, and so on.
PRO TEACHER TIP

The most important achievements to remember are the ones where they earn the most points; and benefit the most in their knowledge

  1. Complete their Assignments
  2. Keep their Mastery Questions at zero

Weekly Reset = Weekly Motivation

Leaderboards reset every Sunday night, giving students a fresh chance to climb the ranks.

Top students and classes earn a place in the Leaderboard History each week — along with bragging rights, eternal glory, and maybe even a handshake from the teacher.

Part 2: The Leaderboards (And how to use them)

When you first open Leaderboards, you'll see the current rankings for all of your classes and how they stack up against each other.

1. Class Level Leaderboard:

  • Compare average scores across all of your classes.
  • Turn it into a team sport — every student can contribute to their class rank. Students will start encouraging each other to get their class ahead. Peer pressure for the win!
  • Consider offering a prize to the class that wins most often throughout the year.
  • Use the History dropdown to see which class won each week.

2. Student Level Leaderboard:

In Current Class Rankings, tap the button on each class card to view that class's Student Leaderboard.

  • Displays the individual leaderboard within that specific class.
  • Total study points are ranked — creating healthy competition as students push to reach the top.
  • Small rewards — like extra credit, a place of honor, or a sticker — go a long way for students who keep showing up at the top.
  • Use the History dropdown to track which students won each week.

PRO TEACHER TIP

Students mirror your energy. Bring excitement to the Leaderboards with playful banter, public shout-outs, and small weekly rewards — consistency keeps motivation high and makes the competition fun.

5.3 Sometimes They Just Need a Push

Part 1: Nudges

VerbMaster automatically sends reminders when students have assignments due — but let's be honest, sometimes they need a little extra push from you.

That's where Nudges come in.

From your Teacher Dashboard, you can send custom notifications to students — even if their app is closed. They'll see the full message when they open VerbMaster.

And yes… it does make a difference.

Part 2: Where to Find Them

You'll see Nudge buttons sprinkled throughout the dashboard — right where you need them most.

1. Assignment Nudges

Path: Class Progress > Assignments > Student Progress (on any assignment).

Look for the Nudge button on the lower right corner of each student's card.

Tap it to open the Message Generator, which will create a quick message focused on completing that specific assignment.

Note: For the current assignment, you can just tap Student Progress on the class card to bring up Student Assignment Progress and nudges.

2. Mastery Nudges

Path: Class Progress > Students

Again, just tap the nudge button in the lower right corner of each student's card.

The generated message will focus on catching up on Mastery Questions.

Part 3: Choose Your Tone

Tap the Tone button to switch the style of the message. Options include:

  • FriendlyFriendly
  • SternStern
  • Passive Aggressive And most importantly… Passive Aggressive

Yes — it's okay to have a little fun.
(Your students will get the joke. Probably.)
