Voix du monde 2

A Révision du présent picks up everything from Voix 1, then the curriculum follows the book through l'impératif, the passé composé with avoir and with être, l'imparfait, and le futur simple.

How this curriculum maps to the textbook

Voix 2 has 11 chapters. This curriculum has 13 assignments across six tenses. The verb list is the 72-verb core set plus aimer, carried forward from Voix 1.

Chapters with no dedicated VerbMaster assignment: Chapter 8 reviews the imparfait (same tense as assignment 11) and teaches the pronoun en. Chapter 9 is passé composé versus imparfait, a usage topic; both tenses are already drilled. Chapter 11 covers adverbs and question tags. The object-pronoun topics in Chapters 2 to 7 are usage built on tenses already in scope.

Assignment 6 merges the book's two single-verb passé composé topics (Chapter 3 aller, Chapter 4 être, avoir, devenir) into one. Assignment 8 covers both of Chapter 5's topics (-er verbs, then -ir and -re verbs with avoir), because VerbMaster groups regular participles together regardless of the infinitive ending.

When to start, and pacing

French 2 students should start in week 1 or 2. The first assignment is the Révision du présent, which lines up with Chapter 1.

Suggested cadence: 1 week for the single-verb assignments (2, 3, 7, 13) and 2 weeks for the rest. That fills about 22 weeks of a 36-week year and leaves room for the passé composé block (assignments 6, 8, 9, 10), which usually needs the most time.

Auto-generated due dates

VerbMaster's default spacing is 1 week per assignment. Plan to adjust it when you set up the class.

About assignment 1: Révision du présent

The Révision covers 66 verbs in the present tense (about 400 forms). The seven verbs the book teaches or re-teaches in Voix 2 (devoir, pouvoir, vouloir, venir, devenir, savoir, connaître) have their own assignments and are left out of it, so the Révision holds exactly the Voix 1 verbs.

  • Continuing students (used VerbMaster with Voix 1): the Révision shows complete on day one. Their first weeks are spent keeping Mastery Reviews at zero.
  • New students: the Révision is their starting point. Spaced repetition concentrates their practice on the forms they miss, so it compresses for most students.
  • Mixed classes: returning students do Mastery Reviews, new students complete the Révision, and everyone converges at assignment 2.

Notes on specific assignments

L'impératif: split by polarity

The book teaches l'impératif as one topic in Chapter 3. VerbMaster drills affirmative and negative commands as separate conjugations, because the negative form wraps the verb (ne parle pas, ne te lève pas) and students type the whole form. Both assignments cover every verb in the list, including the reflexives (lève-toi, ne te lève pas). If you teach only the affirmative in Chapter 3, move assignment 5 later in the editor or delete it.

Reflexive verbs in the passé composé

Assignment 10, Passé composé avec être, includes the eight reflexive verbs from the verb list: se lever, se coucher, se laver, s'habiller, se brosser, se mettre, s'asseoir, s'en aller. Voix 2 does not teach the passé composé of reflexive verbs; that is a Voix 3 Chapter 4 topic. They are included here because reflexive verbs take être in the passé composé, and VerbMaster groups them with the other être verbs.

What to tell students when they reach assignment 10: the reflexive forms follow the same pattern as the other être verbs, with the reflexive pronoun placed before the auxiliary. Elle est arrivée becomes elle s'est levée. The participle agrees with the subject in the same way.

If you would rather keep the reflexives out of Voix 2, remove the eight reflexive verbs from the verb list in the curriculum editor before saving. They will then be absent from every assignment in this curriculum, including the Révision du présent and the imperative assignments, so students would not review the present-tense reflexives they learned in Voix 1 Chapter 11. Most instructors will find it simpler to leave them in and explain the pattern.

What students carry forward

Voix 3 has no separate review block. Its Chapter 1 re-teaches the present and the impératif, Chapter 3 re-teaches the passé composé, Chapter 5 the imparfait, and Chapter 6 the futur simple. For a student who finishes Voix 2 with VerbMaster, those Voix 3 assignments show complete on arrival, and their work is Mastery Reviews until the new content (passé composé of reflexive verbs, conditionnel, subjonctif) begins.
