Lesson 38: Introducing the Imperfect Subjunctive

38.1 Defining the Imperfect Subjunctive

As you learned earlier, the subjunctive mood is used in dependent clauses to express wishes, doubts, emotions, necessity, and other ideas that are not simply presented as facts.

You've seen this with the present subjunctive:

Je veux qu'il parte.

I want him to leave.

In literary and historical writing, when the main clause is set in the past, French may instead use the imperfect subjunctive:

Je voulais qu'il partît.

I wanted him to leave.

The same kinds of expressions trigger the subjunctive; the imperfect subjunctive simply places that dependent clause within literary past narration. In modern spoken French, the present or past subjunctive is normally used instead.

The Imperfect Subjunctive

The imperfect subjunctive is a literary subjunctive form used mainly in past-tense narration.

38.2 Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive

The imperfect subjunctive is built from a form you already know: the il/elle/on form of the passé simple. The only new ingredient is the circumflex—the little "hat" accent you've seen in forms like parlâmes (â, î, û). Here's how we use that form to build it:

1 Find the il/elle/on form in the passé simple.
parler il parla
finir il finit
vendre il vendit
2 Drop the final ‑t, if there is one.
parla parla-
finit fini-
vendit vendi-
3 Add the imperfect subjunctive ending that matches the subject.
parla- + -sses tu parlasses
fini- + -ssions nous finissions
vendi- + circumflex + -t il vendît

The same set of endings applies to every verb:

Because this method starts from the passé simple form, any spelling changes are already built into the stem. For example:

  • commenceril commençaque je commençasse
  • mangeril mangeaque je mangeasse

38.3 Literary vs. Everyday French

Modern French usually keeps the present or past subjunctive in these situations. The imperfect subjunctive is primarily something you need to recognize when reading literary French.

Literary:

Je voulais qu'il partît.

I wanted him to leave.

Everyday:

Je voulais qu'il parte.

I wanted him to leave.

Literary:

Je craignais qu'il fût mort.

I feared he was dead.

Everyday:

Je craignais qu'il soit mort.

I feared he was dead.
