15.1 Irregular Past Participles
You've learned how to combine an auxiliary verb with a past participle to form the passé composé. Regular verbs follow predictable rules, but many common French verbs have irregular past participles that must be learned separately.
Fortunately, these forms are easier to remember in groups. Some share the same ending, while verbs from the same family often follow the same pattern.
15.2 Past Participles Ending in -u
A large number of common irregular past participles end in -u. The stem may also change, so learn each infinitive and past participle together.
| Infinitive | Past Participle |
|---|---|
| vouloir (to want) | voulu |
| devoir (to have to) | dû |
| boire (to drink) | bu |
| croire (to believe) | cru |
| voir (to see) | vu |
| lire (to read) | lu |
| tenir (to hold) | tenu |
| vivre (to live) | vécu |
| connaître (to know) | connu |
| recevoir (to receive) | reçu |
| pleuvoir (to rain) | plu |
This is the largest group, but the stem does not always stay the same. Focus on learning each verb and participle as a pair.
15.3 Past Participles Ending in -is or -i
A few important verbs form past participles ending in -is or -i:
| Infinitive | Past Participle |
|---|---|
| prendre (to take) | pris |
| mettre (to put) | mis |
| suivre (to follow) | suivi |
As we learned earlier, many prefixed verbs follow the same pattern as their base verb:
- The prendre family follows the pris pattern: apprendre → appris; comprendre → compris.
- The mettre family follows the mis pattern: permettre → permis; promettre → promis.
- The suivre family follows the suivi pattern: poursuivre → poursuivi.
15.4 Past Participles Ending in -it
These common past participles end in -it:
| Infinitive | Past Participle |
|---|---|
| dire (to say) | dit |
| écrire (to write) | écrit |
| conduire (to drive) | conduit |
Many verbs ending in -uire follow the same pattern as conduire:
- produire → produit
- traduire → traduit
15.5 Past Participles Ending in -ert
A small group of verbs form past participles ending in -ert:
| Infinitive | Past Participle |
|---|---|
| offrir (to offer) | offert |
| ouvrir (to open) | ouvert |
| découvrir (to discover) | découvert |
Again, related verbs often follow the same pattern:
- couvrir → couvert
- souffrir → souffert
15.6 Essential Exceptions
These three essential verbs have highly irregular past participles:
| Infinitive | Past Participle |
|---|---|
| avoir (to have) | eu |
| être (to be) | été |
| faire (to do, to make) | fait |
As with the other groups, the faire family follows the same past-participle pattern:
- refaire → refait
- défaire → défait
One useful surprise: although aller is irregular in the present tense, its past participle is regular: allé. It forms the passé composé with être rather than avoir, which we'll cover in the next lesson.
