36.1 Irregular Passé Simple Patterns
In the last lesson, you learned the regular passé simple patterns. Irregular verbs change the stem, the endings, or both—but most still fall into a few recognizable groups.
We'll organize the most common irregular forms into three patterns so they're easier to recognize when you read.
36.2 The ‑I Pattern
Many irregular verbs use the same endings you learned for regular ‑IR verbs:
Passé Simple Endings
| Pronouns | ‑i pattern |
|---|---|
| je | -is |
| tu | -is |
| il, elle, on | -it |
| nous | -îmes |
| vous | -îtes |
| ils, elles | -irent |
The stem may be irregular, but once you know it, the endings follow the same ‑is, ‑is, ‑it, ‑îmes, ‑îtes, ‑irent pattern.
Here is prendre fully conjugated:
The ‑i pattern appears across several common irregular verb families, including many verbs ending in ‑dre, ‑tre, ‑ire, and ‑indre.
- prendre → pris
- mettre → mis
- dire → dis
- écrire → écrivis
- voir → vis
- faire → fis
36.3 The ‑U Pattern
Many irregular verbs use the ‑u pattern in the passé simple:
Passé Simple Endings
| Pronouns | ‑u pattern |
|---|---|
| je | -us |
| tu | -us |
| il, elle, on | -ut |
| nous | -ûmes |
| vous | -ûtes |
| ils, elles | -urent |
For many of these verbs, the passé simple stem is the same as the past participle you already know:
| Verb | Past Participle | Passé Simple Stem |
|---|---|---|
| avoir | eu | eu- |
| boire | bu | bu- |
| connaître | connu | connu- |
| devoir | dû | du- |
| pouvoir | pu | pu- |
| savoir | su | su- |
| vouloir | voulu | voulu- |
A few important verbs, including être and mourir, use the same ‑u endings but have stems you'll need to learn separately: être → f- and mourir → mour-.
36.4 The Tenir and Venir Pattern
Tenir, venir, and their related verbs use their own passé simple endings:
Passé Simple Endings
| Pronouns | tenir/venir pattern |
|---|---|
| je | -ins |
| tu | -ins |
| il, elle, on | -int |
| nous | -înmes |
| vous | -întes |
| ils, elles | -inrent |
| Pronoun | tenir | venir |
|---|---|---|
| je | tins | vins |
| tu | tins | vins |
| il, elle, on | tint | vint |
| nous | tînmes | vînmes |
| vous | tîntes | vîntes |
| ils, elles | tinrent | vinrent |
The same pattern carries over to related verbs:
- Tenir gives the pattern for maintenir, obtenir, and soutenir.
- Venir gives the pattern for devenir, revenir, and parvenir.
Reading a high volume of French is one of the most powerful paths to fluency, and most French books—from children's classics to modern novels—tell their stories in the passé simple. Master these forms and you'll read right through il fut ("he was") and ils vinrent ("they came") without breaking stride. Whole libraries open up to you.
