Lesson 8: Stem-Changing Verbs in the Present Tense

8.1 Accent-Grave Verbs

Good news! Not all irregular verbs are so irregular. Some common ‑ER verbs make only small, predictable spelling changes in the present tense, usually to preserve their pronunciation.

For most of the patterns in this lesson, the change appears with je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles, while nous and vous keep the original stem.

Let's look at the four main patterns.

Some verbs change an e or é near the end of the stem to è in the je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles forms.

PRÉFÉRER
(to prefer)
in the Present
je
préfère
tu
préfères
il, elle, on
préfère
nous
préférons
vous
préférez
ils, elles
préfèrent

ACHETER
(to buy)
in the Present
je
j'achète
tu
achètes
il, elle, on
achète
nous
achetons
vous
achetez
ils, elles
achètent

The nous and vous forms keep the original vowel:

  • nous préférons, vous préférez
  • nous levons, vous levez
Tip

If there is more than one e or é in the stem, the one closest to the ending is the one that changes.

8.2 Double-Consonant Verbs

Some verbs in the appeler and jeter families double their l or t in the je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles forms:

APPELER
(to call)
in the Present
je
j'appelle
tu
appelles
il, elle, on
appelle
nous
appelons
vous
appelez
ils, elles
appellent

JETER
(to throw)
in the Present
je
jette
tu
jettes
il, elle, on
jette
nous
jetons
vous
jetez
ils, elles
jettent

The nous and vous forms keep a single consonant:

  • nous appelons, vous appelez
  • nous jetons, vous jetez

Not every verb ending in ‑eler or ‑eter doubles its consonant. Some instead follow the accent-grave pattern:

ACHETER
(to buy)
in the Present
je
j'achète
tu
achètes
il, elle, on
achète
nous
achetons
vous
achetez
ils, elles
achètent

8.3 ‑oyer, ‑uyer, and ‑ayer Verbs

With ‑oyer and ‑uyer verbs, y changes to i in the je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles forms:

ENVOYER
(to send)
in the Present
je
j'envoie
tu
envoies
il, elle, on
envoie
nous
envoyons
vous
envoyez
ils, elles
envoient

ENNUYER
(to bore)
in the Present
je
j'ennuie
tu
ennuies
il, elle, on
ennuie
nous
ennuyons
vous
ennuyez
ils, elles
ennuient

The nous and vous forms keep the y:

  • nous nettoyons, vous nettoyez
  • nous ennuyons, vous ennuyez

With ‑ayer verbs, either spelling is accepted in the changing forms:

PAYER
(to pay)
in the Present
je
paye / paie
tu
payes / paies
il, elle, on
paye / paie
nous
payons
vous
payez
ils, elles
payent / paient

The nous and vous forms always keep the y:

  • nous payons, vous payez

8.4 ‑ger and ‑cer Verbs

Verbs ending in ‑ger and ‑cer are a little different: they change only in the nous form to preserve the soft g or c sound.

‑ger Verbs

Add an e before ‑ons:

MANGER
(to eat)
in the Present
je
mange
tu
manges
il, elle, on
mange
nous
mangeons
vous
mangez
ils, elles
mangent

In French, g normally has a hard sound before o. The extra e in mangeons keeps the soft g sound heard in manger.

‑cer Verbs

Change c to ç before ‑ons:

COMMENCER
(to begin)
in the Present
je
commence
tu
commences
il, elle, on
commence
nous
commençons
vous
commençez
ils, elles
commencent

In French, c normally has a hard sound before o. The cédille (ç) in commençons keeps the soft c sound heard in commencer.
