Spell-Change Verbs

We’ve seen these verbs before, back in the preterite indicative. In the subjunctive these are going to change again in the same way (C → QU ; G → GU ; Z → C), but now they’ll do it in all forms (not just the yo form). Just like before, these spell changes allow the spelling and the pronunciation to work together. See here:

There could be more! Some others teach that there are many more spell-changing verbs* in the preterite, but, the way VerbMaster has set it up, we have “caught” a lot of potential irregulars and made the subjunctive a bit more tidy for you. Starting from the yo form of the present indicative and removing the -O saved you a lot of trouble.

  1. * These include ‑(G)UIR verbs; ‑CER/‑CIR verbs; and ‑GER/‑GIR verbs. Don’t worry if you run into those: follow the rules for the “regular present subjunctive”, and you will be fine.
